Communists remind one of the Amish - a bit provincial and naive. The
Chinese government worked hard to bring the 2008 summer games to
Beijing, presumably to show the world how modern and "open" their society
has become. Now they appear to actually believe that they can control the
flow of information during this quadrennial event.
Specifically, the Red Chinese authorities have hinted that live broadcasts
might be forbidden during the games. If there is unrest or an embarrassing
protest, they can edit it out before the world finds out. The only problem
with this plan is the thousands of cell phones with video capacity that the
fans will have with them! Haven't the sons of Mao heard of youtube?
Having invited the world to their capitol, they shouldn't fool themselves that
repression can be kept secret.
Recent demonstrations wherever the Olympic torch shows up have focused
on the just cause of Tibet. As a Biblical Christian, one must call Tibetan
Buddhism what it is - a popular but false religion. But no theological error
of the Dalai Lama justified the invasion of Tibet fifty years ago by the
godless Maoists. The Bible is clear that, since the fracturing of human
languages at the Tower of Babel, God intends for culturally distinct people
groups to have separate national existences.
He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the
earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their
habitation... Acts 17:26
The people of Tibet simply are not Chinese, but indeed a people with a
language and culture of their own. Of course, as long as Chinese
Christians are persecuted by their own tyrannical leaders, we should be
surprised by the behavior of the Bullies of Beijing. But should call for a
boycott of these Olympics? Certainly not!
The Olympic games are an international event. Why punish athletes from
all over the globe for the actions of their hosts? Especially as long as we
keep buying cheap Chinese goods down at the BoxMart, any boycott that
singles out the Olympics is ridiculous. God warned the Israelites not to
entangle themselves with foreign nations just to acquire gold for their
rulers. Yet we make friends with Red China just so that we can get
unnecessary plastic objects!
When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee,
and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king
over me, like as all the nations that are about me;
Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God
shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee:
thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.
But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return
to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the
LORD hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.
Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away:
neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold. Deut 17:14-17
Let the Olympians take their silver and gold medallions from Beijing.
